Let's go back to the early 1800s and the great Westward Expansion.
As the great Westward Expansion began, spreading to the treeless prairie, demand for lumber increased dramatically. New towns were being built, railroads stretching westward across the country, along with a vast number of homes, forts, ships, and buildings - all of which called for incredible amounts of lumber.
The plentiful forests in New York and Maine, which till then had provided most of the young nation's timber, were running out. As their supply depleted, attention turned to the Michigan forests, which were believed to be inexhaustible. This brought about the great heyday of logging in Michigan.
Check out the excellent timeline of logging in the US that we've included: Logging has such a rich history in the development of our nation and we're so excited to be a small part of this story!
